David Holt - an Introduction

Reading David Holt opens us to a most original feeling intelligence. Writing from the standpoint of Jung's psychology, his work speaks across to the whole psychotherapeutic community. Holt's writings are sometimes difficult and always seminal. Who else was able to bring together Jung, Marx, and alchemy? His themes lead us into metaphysics, time, psychosis, theatre, body, economy, and much more; in a way that is highly personal, yet also directly relevant to the whole presentday human context. In David Holt we hear the selfsame spirit that spoke through Jung.

David Holt was born into a Liverpool shipping family in 1926. After a career in book and newspaper publishing, he trained at the C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich, from 1961 to 1966. His dissertation was entitled ‘Persona and Actor’.

Back in England, he established a private practice both in London and Oxford. From 1971 to 1982, he taught and supervised at the Westminster Pastoral Foundation. From 1978 to 1991, he led the theatre and psychology weekends, entitled ‘Jung and Hermeneutics’, at Hawkwood College, Gloucester. He also served as the Chairman of the Analytical Psychology Club, and the Guild of Pastoral Psychology, both in London. In 1986 he became a founding member of the Oxford Psychotherapy Society.

He died at home in Oxford on Easter Sunday 2002.
